The World’s Tallest Hemp Skyscraper Nears Completion In Cape Town, South Africa

The tallest building made out of Hemp in the world is shaping up nicely as it appears to be nearing completion. The building, which will be home to around 50 apartments, is making history as the world’s first hemp skyscraper.

The new hotel has been built using hempcrete blocks and other hemp-related building materials. The original five-story building was bought by Hemporium’s co-founder Duncan Parker in 2016, and the exciting project has been undertaken by hemp producer Hemporium in partnership with Afrimat Hemp and Wolf + Wolf Architects.

Once complete, it will house Hemporium’s flagship store and the Hemp Hotel.

The core of cannabis plants along with lime and a chemical binder mix is used to produce Hempcrete blocks and are extremely environmentally friendly – being carbon negative and providing awesome insulation so that less air-conditioning and heating is required.

Hemp projects are taking off around the world, and it’s predicted that within five years it will be normal to use hempcrete (which is poured like typical concrete) or basic hemp blocks. According to the New York Times, whilst hemp blocks are more expensive than traditional building products, they save money in other ways, such as reducing the construction schedule by up to 30%.

Unfortunately, the Cape Town project has been more expensive because hemp had to be imported from England. But, with hemp cultivation licenses issued in SA last year, prices will drop for future projects as blocks will be sourced locally.

Calling it the world’s “first hemp skyscraper”, the New York Times reported that “84 Harrington is already rising from the ground and, at 12 stories, will be the tallest structure in the world that incorporates largely hemp construction. Because of its load-bearing limitations, a traditional frame is still needed, but all of the walls are made from hemp blocks.”

Parker told the NYT that once supply issues are sorted, hemp will become a construction staple in South Africa. Wolf + Wolf Architects will next take on a housing development with 25,000 homes, made from hemp blocks.

  • The Benefits Of Juicing Marijuana

    The Benefits Of Juicing Marijuana

Like many health and wellness fads, juicing marijuana has become a trend among stoned citizens and for a good reason. There are lots of potential perks and health benefits that come with green juicing. As for marijuana, it’s technically a vegetable and offers many of the same nutrients as other leafy greens. The cannabis plant is loaded with beneficial cannabinoids that are unique to the marijuana plant. Juiced cannabis is a nutritionally dense, very potent medicinal compound, without the psychoactive components normally activated when heating the plant.

    What is juicing?

Juicing is extracting and drinking the juice of fresh vegetables, often with the goal of boosting your health or replacing a meal. Vegetables are defined as any plant part consumed for food that is not a fruit or seed but includes mature fruits that are eaten as part of the main meal.

    The inventor of cannabis juice

Dr. William L. Courtney is the genius who invented cannabis juice. The avid cannabis activist became a household name when one of his patients who suffered from lupus decided to give the treatment a go. Her many issues and symptoms got better and soon went into remission. Today she leads a normal life.

    The benefits of juicing marijuana

Studies show that hemp plants offer an array of health benefits.  When it comes to cannabis juice, most of the benefits are due to the cannabinoids in your plants, such as THC, CBD, CBN and CBG, which is all the rage. Chlorophyll is also incredibly beneficial, as well as terpenes, flavonoids and alkaloids. Marijuana plants also contain a lot of magnesium and proteins. Many of these benefits are thanks to Chlorophyll which can be used on its own thanks to its long list of benefits. The main benefits, however, are thanks to cannabinoids.

    Four Fun Fudge Facts

Here are some interesting fudge facts to nudge on:

ONE: The Americans claim fudge as their invention and say the popular confectionery dates back to the late 1880s when Emelyn Battersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar College in New York, wrote that a schoolmate’s cousin had made fudge in Baltimore and sold it for 40 cents a pound. She obtained the recipe, which consisted of four ingredients – sugar, cream, unsweetened chocolate and butter, and made 15 kilograms of it for a university auction.

Word of the sweet treat spread to other women’s colleges and different versions of the original recipe appeared with added ingredients such as marshmallows, molasses and vanilla extract.

Some think the fudge recipe was, in fact, copied from the Scots who were making a similar confectionery called “tablet” in the early 18th century and which consisted of sugar, condensed milk and butter.

TWO: The record for the largest slab of fudge in the world weighed over 2 600 kilograms and was crafted at the Northwest Fudge Factory in Ontario, Canada in 2010. Preparation took a week and contained vanilla, chocolate and maple flavours.

THREE: Mackinac Island, a tiny 9,8km² island in Michigan in the US, considers itself the fudge capital of the world with 14 fudge shops in the town with the oldest dating back to 1887. The island churns out over 4 535kgs of fudge daily during peak season and fudge makers ship in about 10 tons of sugar and 10 tons of butter to create and craft their products. Festivalgoers are referred to as “fudgies”.

FOUR: Mamie Eisenhower, the wife of the 34th US President, Ike Eisenhower, was a huge fudge fan and even crafted her own recipe, Mamie’s Million-Dollar Fudge, which included chopped nuts and marshmallows.
