Guinness World Records America confirmed that a family from Hawaii has claimed the title for the heaviest avocado in the world.
The enormous avocado weighs a whopping 5.6 pounds (2.55 kg), which is 18 times heavier than a typical avocado weighing a little over 5 ounces (140 grams).
The Pokini family from the island of Maui told the local News that they received their Guinness World Records certificate validating the achievement after they applied in December 2019.
“When the Pokini’s avocado tree started unexpectedly producing large fruit, they decided to attempt the Guinness World Records title to show everyone that Hawaii produces amazing avocados,” the Guinness World Records entry online says.
Pokini told the newspaper that the family first submitted their application in early 2018, but found that they needed more documentation to prove their avocado was indeed the heaviest.
So they waited until their 10-year-old, 20-foot-tall tree produced another massive avocado and this time got the correct proof.
“This avo was about the size of my 12-year-old son’s head,” Pokini revealed.
Holy Guacamole
The family made guacamole from the giant fruit.
“We cut it open and made a whole bunch of guacamole, sharing with family and friends,” she told the Maui News. “It fed a lot of people. We even gave some away.”
