Ditch the basic dinner plans and treat your taste buds to a summer feast at Upper Union. The trendy Cape Town eatery, situated just off Kloof Street, has raised the bar by introducing a wine pairing option for its signature chef’s sharing menu.
Since its 2023 launch, Chef Amori and her team at Upper Union have been crafting moments of pure indulgence and joy. The chef’s evocative approach to cooking ignites a powerful sense of nostalgia, where every dish is savored for its flavor, shared with love, and cherished for its connection to people, place, and culture.
Uncorking the flavours of summer

Chef Amori Burger and Sommelier Tongai Charie, the culinary masterminds at Upper Union, have been on a quest for gastronomic nirvana by the taste of things. The duo’s passion project artfully combines the season’s vibrant flavors with exquisite, rare wines from South Africa, crafting an unforgettable culinary experience that will leave you craving more.
The two spent countless hours tasting a tapestry of forgotten wines from the Upper Union wine cellar to uncover the ideal companion for every dish on the new summer menu. They even included tasting notes on the menu to explain to guests why we’ve chosen certain wines for certain dishes.

“Wine is such a beautiful addition to a meal, and I think it really adds another
element of flavour to a dish. Since we have opened, we have been building up our cellar and constantly evolving our wine list. It’s now reached the point where we have a beautiful collection of wine to choose from for the pairing menu, and I’m so excited to share it with our guests.” – Chef Amori Burger

The Wine Menu

Pairings include the likes of Van Loggerenberg’s Geronimo Cinsault 2023, which
they have matched with the ox tongue with spekboom chutney, and the La Brie
Syrah 2022, which is paired with the pasture menu’s main course of picanha steak –
served with an asparagus chimichurri and a stout demi.
Guests can also enjoy a gorgeous glass of Colmant Brut Reserve with the dessert of chocolate and hazelnut praline with Romany Cream crumble.
Explaining the pairing for the dessert, the sommelier’s notes describe how the Cape
Classic’s effervescence cuts through the rich chocolate, while the wine’s citrus and
brioche notes enhance the praline and lime gel.
Known for her bold and beautiful culinary creations, each dish served from Chef Amori’s kitchen is layered with love on the palate.
