In the ever-changing world of cannabis legalization, the industry has come a long way. Most of us still have very vivid memories of dodgy back alley deals to get our hands on something that resembled marijuana. Once you have your hands on some primo dry bud there are many smoking options available to choose from. If you are into old school joint-rolling you may have suffered what is known as a ‘canoeing joint’.

Some may ask what a canoeing joint is, while others shudder at the thought of enduring the torment of a running joint. A canoe is a lightweight narrow vessel which is pointed at both ends and open on top. If your joint is burning unevenly, you might see the resemblance to the narrow open-top boat.

Canoeing happens when you light up a joint unevenly or that has not been rolled tight enough, the paper over the air pocket area will catch fire and burns quicker on that side.

How to fix it

  1. Moisten the faster burning side with saliva, or H2O when you are sharing.
  2. Tilt the joint so the faster burning side is facing down, the heat should rise through to the other side.
  3. Burn the slower burning side with a lighter until it is even with the other.
  4. Cut off the uneven tip of the joint and light it again.

Prevention is better than a cure

  1. Grinding – make sure your cannabis flowers are evenly ground and remove all the seeds and stems.
  2. Rolling – Roll tight and make sure the Mary Jane is shaped properly when you roll, eliminating any space between the ground bud and paper.
  3. Lighting – Make sure the entire tip is a burning cherry before giving your joint a propper puff.
  4. Blow – The wind can cause your perfectly rolled masterpiece to canoe, avoid smoking where the wind blows.
