  • EPM301 – A Synthetic Cannabinoid Acid More Potent Than THC Or CBD Is Discovered By The Godfather of Cannabis Research

EPM301 – A Synthetic Cannabinoid Acid More Potent Than THC Or CBD Is Discovered By The Godfather of Cannabis Research

Professor Raphael Mechoulam is known as the ‘godfather of cannabis research’, he effectively created the foundation for modern medical marijuana. His latest discovery was announced with the introduction of a new patented compound; a cannabidiolic acid methyl ester, or EPM301. The synthetic, fully stable acid-based cannabinoid molecule has created quite the stir in the world of medical cannabis.

The newest findings resulted from a partnership between Prof Mechoulam and EPM, a global patient-focused pharmaceutical company that is addressing unmet patient needs. EPM is on a mission to develop safe, effective and accessible treatments for a wide range of ailments. There is a global demand to develop treatments for ailments and diseases that have previously been medicated with steroid or opioid-based drugs.

Selection of Pills Replaced by EPM301

    EPM

EPM was founded in 2017 by Reshef Swisa and Asaf Ohana in collaboration with Prof Mechoulam to unlock the true potential of cannabinoid acids. The trio envisioned uncovering the hidden potential of cannabinoids and offer an alternative to current medicine without having to use or consume the plant itself.

    Medical Research Facility

The team has created a platform that has led to the discovery of 14 patented synthetic molecules and their production processes, one of which is EPM301. There are currently three of EPM’s treatments that have been advanced to human trials with the guidance of the FDA, Psoriasis, IBD and ARDS. These treatments are focused on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Psoriasis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. All of the synthetic cannabinoid acid-based products are protected, potent and industrially reproducible to resolve any pharmaceutical challenges.

    FATHER OF CANNABIS RESEARCH

Prof Raphael Mechoulam has been the driving force behind cannabis research and bringing cannabis to the forefront of the medical community. His life mission has been to push humanity forward with his work with cannabis and cannabinoid acids.

Prof Mechoulam was born on 5 November 1930 in Bulgaria. His father was a celebrated physician who later worked as the Surgeon General at the local hospital. The Mechoulam family immigrated to Isreal in 1949, where Raphael studied chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The professor received a Ph. D from the Weizmann Institute in 1958. His thesis on the chemistry of steroids led him to pursue his research interest in the chemistry and biological effects of natural products. In 1963 the prof received his first batch of cannabis, which he sourced from the local police station. It was during the same year he made a huge breakthrough in cannabis research by elucidating the structure and stereochemistry of CBD. He also then isolated and synthesised THC the following year.

    Researcher Looking into Microscope

Mechoulam discovered the endocannabinoid system by identifying cannabis brain receptors, anandamide and 2-AG, in the 1990s. His discoveries, coupled with a passion for advancing science, have been honoured with more than 25 prestigious awards and three honorary doctorate degrees.

    WHAT IS EPM301

EPM301 is a synthetic cannabinoid acid used to produce prescription medicines that are cost-effective, easily reproduced and treat a range of inflammatory conditions.

Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are secondary substances that only appear after their primary acids are decarboxylated. These mysterious acid compounds are much more potent than cannabinoids but are naturally unstable, therefor it was previously rendered useless in pharmaceutical drug development. EPM has developed a method to work with structurally volatile cannabis compounds by modifying the acids to allow for large scale use.

The prof used a simple chemical process called esterification to stabilize the compounds. This allowed the team to spend time monitoring the compound’s activities, which included reducing inflammation, suppressing anxiety and nausea. The result was a cannabidiolic acid that is a more potent compound than CBD or THC and has no negative side effects. In fact, EPM has proven the use of cannabidiolic acid can essentially substitute steroid and opioid drugs without compromising their efficiency.

    Ok Hand XRay

We owe a great deal of our current understanding of cannabis, cannabinoids and their effects on humans to Professor Raphael Mechoulam. His ambition and passion have led to discoveries that have changed perceptions and contributed to medical advancements. We are optimistic about these and similar discoveries and how new cannabinoids like EPM301 will shape the future of medical marijuana!

The Food Network Explores Culinary Cannabis With Chopped 420 TV Series

The Food Network is tapping into the culinary cannabis food trend with the launch of Chopped 420, a spin-off of the popular Chopped TV series. As the name suggests, this high concept TV series will use cannabis as its basket ingredient. To win Chopped 420, chefs will need to create appetisers, main dishes and desserts using a variety of mystery ingredients and parts of the cannabis plant. Besides scouring the Chopped pantry for ingredients, each competitor must also navigate the Chopped “greenhouse” for cannabis or CBD-infused products to incorporate into their dishes. The winner of the cooking competition will walk away with $10,000.

Food Network president Courtney White told the press that the TV series marks the “first time in Chopped history” that chefs will “utilise cannabis to enhance their dishes.” Even though eating marijuana can get you ‘high’, the herb offers a lot more to the culinary world than intoxication. Different parts of the cannabis plant can be used in cooking and bring about different flavours in the food.

    Chopped 420 High Rollers

Stoned citizen and Comedian Ron Funches plays host and the judges include chefs Esther Choi, Luke Reyes and Sam Talbot; drag performer and cannabis activist Laganja Estranja, and comedian Tacarra Williams.

With episode titles such as “High Expectations,” “Get Baked or Get Chopped,” and “Go Green or Go Home,” the budding chefs will have get creative and use their imaginations when it comes to adding cannabis to the foods they whip up.

The show is set to air on discovery+ on April 20, the annual holiday for cannabis culture.

Chopped 420 isn’t the first cooking competition on television to emphasize weed cuisine. Cooked With Cannabis premiered on Netflix on Stoners Day in 2020. Competing chefs also get to use THC- and CBD-infused oils in their cooking to impress the celebrity judges and get them high AF. The show fell flat with critics, with some saying it failed to bring the talents of cannabis cooks to the masses.

  • Cannabis Legalization in South Africa – When Will The Dagga Bill Be Finalized And What Will The Cannabis Codification Look Like

Cannabis Legalization in South Africa – When Will The Dagga Bill Be Finalized And What Will The Cannabis Codification Look Like

The State of Cannabis Legalization in South Africa has been a proper rollercoaster ride in the last few years. Cannabis cultivation for private use has been decriminalized, yet civilians are still being arrested and prosecuted for cannabis-related misdemeanours. The National Cannabis Master Plan was tabled and open to public commentary, leaving South Africans waiting in anticipation for cannabis legalization in the southernmost republic on the African continent.

Will South Africa see marijuana legalization in the near future? What will regulations around legal cannabis look like? Will stoners, regulators, cultivators, producers and distributors be equally satisfied by the governing law? What are the processes, licensing fees and tax rates suggested by the government? We take a look at the current state of Cannabis Legalization in South Africa, what is being said and what the future holds for Stoned Citizens of our republic.

    CANNABIS HISTORY IN SOUTH AFRICA

Cannabis has been a part of South African history for a long time, dating back as far as the 1600s when the first Dutch settlers started bartering with the local indigenous tribes. The first laws prohibiting the cultivation of marijuana was introduced in 1680 and ultimately overturned by 1700. The introduction of the draconian Weeds Act of 1937 guaranteed a comprehensive ban on cannabis in South Africa. The introduction of further legislation in 1971 and 1992 ultimately restricted cannabis use and cultivation indefinitely.

In 2008 it was estimated that cannabis was used by 3.2 million South Africans. The same year Interpol estimated that the country was the fourth-largest producer of cannabis in the world and that a third of the cannabis that is seized around the globe originated from South Africa. The illicit cannabis market has exploded regardless of the status of cannabis legalization in South Africa.

    MEDICAL MARIJUANA

    Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana was legalized in South Africa with the introduction of the 2017 Cultivation of Cannabis and Manufacturer of Cannabis-Related Pharmaceutical Products for Medical and Research Purposes. The governing regulations were published in a Guidance Document in November 2019. The document claimed that the second and final version of the bill would be aligned with SAHPRA’s mandate and implemented by 15 November the same year.

South African citizens may gain access to unregistered medicinal cannabis or cannabinoid containing medicines if so prescribed by a medical practitioner. The prescribing practitioner must apply to the South African Health Products and Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) for the use of an unregistered medicine. Medical marijuana is sourced internationally and imported by the Department of Health, because the current status of cannabis legalization in South Africa does not allow for the cultivation and trade of cannabis, even for medicinal reasons.

Medical Cannabis South Africa together with Biodata and Labat Healthcare has launched an observational cannabis study. The study is open to any South African citizen who would like to explore using medical marijuana for chronic pain management. Click here for more details and to access the online application form.

    DECRIMINALIZATION

    Cannabis Legalization in South Africa

A ruling that was passed by Chief Justice Raymon Zondo in 2018 decriminalized the cultivation, possession and use of cannabis for personal consumption. The court ordered that it should be legal for adults to grow and smoke cannabis in the privacy of their own homes and that it should not be a criminal offence to be in possession of cannabis. The court further ruled that parliament had to ratify the unconstitutionality surrounding the cultivation and consumption of cannabis for private adult use, within a period of 24 months.

    CANNABIS FOR PRIVATE PURPOSES BILL

In September 2020 a draft version of the Cannabis For Private Use Bill, drafted by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, was tabled in parliament. The aim of the bill was to regulate the cultivation, possession and personal use of cannabis by adults. The bill had some major shortcomings as none of its conclusions was backed by appropriate science or research. The public response had a general consensus of superficial relief, on the one hand, we are taking steps in the right direction. However, on the other hand, the irrational limitations in terms of cultivation and possession are unjustified and were concluded without any scientific or research-based evidence.

    UNITED NATIONS

    United Nations Conference in Session

In December 2020 the UN held a session with member countries with the purpose of reviewing and voting on recommendations made by the World Health Organization. The WHO’s recommendations surrounding the classification of cannabis in international drug control treaties were made in January 2019. The organization suggested that cannabis and its derivatives be removed from the list of schedule IV substances in the 1960 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Member countries were allowed two years for intensive and detailed consideration before 53 member states voted on the reclassification.

During the session; 27 member states voted in favour of the reclassification of cannabis. South Africa was one of eight African nations who voted to reclassify cannabis, there was one absentation and 25 votes against. Although cannabis use for non-medical or scientific reasons remains illegal under the convention, reclassification has opened the doors for large scale studies and scientific research. The outcomes of which may motivate other countries to support the legalization of cannabis and benefit from the massive global market it is creating.

    DALRRD

Legal Cannabis Grow in South Africa

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, DALRRD for short, has been the driving force behind the National Cannabis Master Plan (NCMA). The master plan is aimed at diversifying the South African economy by contributing to growth, inclusivity, job creation and poverty alleviation. According to the DALRRD, the National Cannabis Master Plan in its current state has been endorsed by the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Cannabis, the Inter-Ministerial Committee and the executive committee of DALRRD.

The proposed bill has been made subject to a consultation process with the public and private stakeholders. The department scheduled a virtual workshop to consult the cannabis private sector on the NCMA and provide a broad framework for the development and growth of the cannabis industry as a whole.

The South African government has recently accelerated the development of the masterplan, due to the mounting pressure following the loss of income and exorbitant expenses surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

    FIELDS OF GREEN FOR ALL

Fields of Green for All Logo

The dedicated team at Fields of Green For All (FGFA) have worked tirelessly over the last decade to create a manifesto for marijuana reform in South Africa. The manifesto has been curated and revised by local and international industry experts, a devoted bona fide legal team and a group of zealous legalization activists and affiliates. The manifesto provides a large body of evidence along with the relevant research which could assist regulators in finalizing the NCMP and fast-tracking the process of cannabis legalization in South Africa.

FGFA has submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) in response the the draft NCMA, which included an updated manifesto to be used as a guideline to finalize the Act. Although FGFA largely agrees with the draft NCMP, it has some reservations around the assumptions, terms and ideas put forward by a government body with absolutely no knowledge or experience in the field. The draft bill has categorized the cannabis industry as; Medicine, Food, Industrial and Recreational. FGFA’s Myrtle Clarke is of the opinion that the latter classification should be titled ‘Responsible Adult Use’ instead, to avoid any negative stigma and inaccuracy.

    CDCSA

    Cannabis Development Council of SA

The Cannabis Development Council of South Africa, aka CDCSA, is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation. The NGO was founded with the purpose to represent the interest of the cannabis community in South Africa and oversee reform around cannabis cultivation and use. The CDCSA is in partnership with industry specialists and cannabis reform organisations like Afristar Foundation, as well as the Western Cape Government and Wesgro.

CDCSA envisions establishing a group of cannabis industry leaders who will represent the full diversity of the South African population and drive for full social, economic and political inclusion. The group will represent all the Stoned Citizens of South Affrica when lobbying legislation in parliament, and in turn, support government initiatives to raise awareness around the health risks and socio-economical potential of the marijuana plant.

The CDCSA has developed a Proposed Policy with the primary objectives of facilitating the establishment and promotion of a local cannabis industry. They want to ensure cannabis is made available as a tool for broad-based socio-economical development and advance an inclusive self-regulating association, of duly elected representatives, to regulate and control the legal cannabis industry in its infancy.

    THE HAZE CLUB

    The Haze Club Logo

The Haze Club, aka THC, is a cannabis grow club located in Cape Town. Their business model offers individuals a leased space for the specific purpose of cultivating cannabis for private use. Part of the service THC offers is to act on behalf of its clients in the cultivation, harvesting and processing of their cannabis plants.

The THC facility was raided by the SAPS in 2020, at the time all of the plants and equipment was confiscated from the site. The director and employees are subsequently facing charges of cultivation and trafficking, with a minimum sentence of 15 years. In the meantime, the director has filed a motion to have the cannabis grow club model they use at THC recognised as being in line with the 2018 Constitutional Court ruling.

    GMP CERTIFICATION

A letter published on 9 March 2021, by SAHPRA, outlines the application process and requirements to obtain GMP Certification. Cultivators who are in possession of a Section 22C(1)(b) license may apply for GMP Certification. The required license is regulated by the Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 and allows for the cultivation of cannabis for the purpose of producing scheduled substances.

The GMP Certificate is issued by SAHPRA once they have conducted an inspection of the facility and they are satisfied that all manufacturing practices are in line with the SA Guide To Good Manufacturing Practises. The certificate limits business activities to cloning, vegetation, flowering, harvesting, trimming, drying and bulk packaging. Sales are not regulated or permitted by the GMP Certification. SAHPRA has confirmed the issuance of licenses for the cultivation and export of cannabis. A total of 16 licences have been issued across the country, each with five-year validity.

Enjoying Cannabis Legalization in South Africa

Will Private Cannabis Clubs be left in peace to operate and grow cannabis on behalf of their members? Will we be completely happy with the final bill that gets ascendant to Pres. Rama’s office? Will there be enough protocols in place and enforced to ensure the goals outlined in NCMP are being strived to achieve? What does prison reform look like?

Although we have many unanswered questions, we are optimistic that the wheels are turning. I hope those responsible for finalizing the NCMP are working hard, even if it is from home. Cannabis legalization in South Africa might be right around the corner – get ready stoned citizens, a new day is dawning!

  • Can You Overdose On Cannabis?

    Can You Overdose On Cannabis?

Is there something like a fatal dose of marijuana and can you overdose on cannabis? It’s a good and very important question! Hypothetically, what’s the worst thing that could happen? An extreme case of marijuana paranoia?

A stoned reporter for Elemental asked a PHD drug expert the same question and this is what the boffin had to say:

It all depends critically on how much THC you consume. With legalization going global, we’re seeing cannabis extracts with very, very high THC, and we’re seeing more people turn up in emergency departments with adverse reactions. In adults, these adverse reactions include severe anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and other “psychotic” symptoms. A racing heart and, in rarer cases, nausea and vomiting are also well-documented phenomena.

Wayne Hall has published hundreds of peer-reviewed articles on the drug’s effects, good and bad.

Recent data suggest that alcohol-related hospital admissions dwarf the number of cannabis-only hospital admissions by a factor of 25. But many, many more people consume alcohol, which makes such comparisons tricky.

Hall goes on to explains that when people smoke marijuana, the effects tend to be almost immediate and are therefore self-limiting. Some heavy and habitual smokers are able to tolerate so much THC that they can keep smoking to the point that they have a bad reaction. But with ingestible products, there’s often a lag between consumption and felt effect. It’s easier for people to take a lot more than they intend to.

Can an excessive dose of cannabis cause death or permanent damage?

According to Hall, there are some reports of stroke or heart issues following an acute overdose. But these are extremely rare and may not be strictly attributable to cannabis. Cannabis mixed with other drugs — and in particular, synthetic cannabinoid products such as Spice or K2 – is another story with a bunch of complications. Research has linked these concoctions to heart attacks, seizures, and other life-threatening reactions. But when it comes to pure cannabis, including high-THC products, the risks of a deadly or damaging overdose seem to be “quite low,” he says.

    Other experts agreed.

A fatal overdose after cannabis consumption is highly unlikely. As for lingering health issues following an acute overdose, not according to my knowledge. Effects of acute cannabis intoxication are transient.

Kevin Hill, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.

The truth is that although marijuana is one of the safest drugs around, far safer than opioids, alcohol, Tylenol, or antidepressants, it is still toxic when the dose is large enough. So be safe and take it easy. Keep in mind: it’s all about the trip, not the destination!

  • DIY Hash – Everything You Need To Know About Hashish And How To Make Your Own Cannabis Extract At Home

DIY Hash – Everything You Need To Know About Hashish And How To Make Your Own Cannabis Extract At Home

My very first experience with hash was at a party that was hosted at the venue I was working at, at the time. The event promoter had offered me a hit of a hash-cigarette, while we were setting up the event. I had been smoking marijuana for a few years at that stage, but never tried hash of any kind. It goes without saying the rest of the afternoon was quite the adventure setting up for the rubber ducky themed festivities to follow that evening. To my surprise, my new toking partner had made the bubble hash himself! The night went down without a hitch and I ended up having such an amazing experience that I was left thinking: what is hash and how do I make my own DIY hash at home?

    WHAT IS HASH

Hash, which is short for Hashish, sometimes also spelt hasheesh; is a type of cannabis extract with a rich history across multiple cultures across the globe. Hashish was most probably the first form of cannabis concentrate, with written accounts dating back thousands of years. It is made by compressing and processing the trichomes of the marijuana plant by rubbing the trichomes, or resin glands, together to form rolled pieces.

    Trichome rich cannabis flower

Good hash should have a solid consistency, be rich chocolate or sandy in colour and have an aromatic scent. Depending on where and how the hash was produced and what cannabis strain was used; the colour can sometimes be transparent, yellow, black or red and have a texture ranging from brittle to malleable.

Hashish, which translates to ‘gaanja’ in Hindi, is a full-spectrum cannabis concentrate that is extracted without using any solvents. This means it contains most of the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids found in the marijuana plant. Hash contains all these compounds that act synergetically to harmonize the psychoactive effects of the plant, which is known as the Entourage Effect. It can be consumed orally as an edible, vaporized or smoked with ground ganja.

Lighting a cannabis pipe with crumbled hash

Making your own DIY hash might seem like a tedious process, but is totally worth the effort of making your own at home. DIY Hash is fairly easy to make and requires no special equipment or solvents, but you will need to apply some serious elbow grease.

Hash is traditionally made by processing the flowers of the mature female marijuana plant, because of the high trichome content. Trichomes are the hairlike structure on the flowering cannabis plant that is rich in all the desired cannabinoids, terpenes and lipids.

    WHERE DID HASH COME FROM

Hash is thought to have originated from the Middle East and Central Asia, although it has a long history in Lebanon, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Morocco and Pakistan. The first written record of hash consumption was published in Cairo in 1123 CE, the pamphlet derogatorily referred to Nizari Muslims as ‘hashish eaters’.

    Egypt, Pyramid and a Camel

In 1596 Jan Huyghen van Linschoten documented his experience consuming Bhang in the East, comparing it to the smokable hash he encountered in Turkey and Egypt. Hashish arrived in Europe during the 18th century, after French troops were introduced to the cannabis concentrate while away in Egypt.

Theodor Friedrich Ludwig Nees von Esenbeck, who was a pharmacist and botanist, recorded the first description of the usefulness of hashish in 1830. In 1839 the European School of Medicine recognised a comprehensive study on Himalayan hemp; published by Sir William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, an Irish physician. O’Shaughnessy prescribed hashish to relieve cramps and alleviate symptoms associated with ailments like rabies, cholera and tetanus.

An American author named Fitz Hugh Ludlow reported on hashish in 1857. Three years later, Charles Baudelaire, a French poet, put pen to paper for Les Paradis artificiels: Opium et Haschisch. The book, which translates to; The Artificial Paradises, outlines his encounters experimenting and being under the influence of opium and hashish.

By the end of the 19th century, in Europe and the USA, hashish had played a significant role in the treatment of pain, migraines, menstrual cramps, asthma, insomnia and whooping cough. Hash was also believed to relieve stomach aches, diarrhoea, itching related to pruritus and continuous bleeding; as well as increase or stimulate appetite and overcome depression.

    PROHIBITION

The use of hashish as medicine, or otherwise, was ultimately globally prohibited by the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. At the time it was important for the conference to “find a method and lay down permanent rules for determining the number of drug addicts as accurately as possible, especially since it was very difficult to distinguish between a consumer of hashish and a person addicted to that drug”.

    United Nations Conference in Session

The UN conference defined the newly prohibited hashish as “the separated resin, whether crude or purified, obtained from the cannabis plant’. Until recently, the UN considered cannabis to have particularly dangerous properties; listing cannabis and its derivatives as a Schedule IV drug along with Heroin and Methamphetamine.

    A BRAVE NEW WORLD

In the 1990s Morocco held a quasi-monopoly on hashish, meaning they had a handful of large suppliers with very little competition. The Morrocan hash bricks were initially of poor quality but were in great demand by travellers and smugglers alike. Traditional artisanal producers were motivated to produce a superior quality product and began cultivating the perfect cannabis to produce higher-grade hash.

Although there was a dramatic shift in the market in the 2000s, due to an increase in homegrown cannabis cultivation, hash remains in high demand around the world. Due to the legalization of cannabis in certain countries around the world, there are more legitimate hashish producing countries. These regions have adapted more advanced cultivation techniques and developed cannabis strains with the desired characteristics to produce greater yields with improved resin quality.

The turn of the century brought new forms of cannabis concentrates that include oils, shatter, crumble, budder and wax. Concentrates are generally produced by using a solvent to extract the cannabinoids and other cannabis compounds, before purging the solvent agent. These are dangerous procedures and should only be performed by trained individuals in a controlled environment.

    DIY Hash - Cannabis extract

    DIY HASH

Hash can be made using the trimmings, leaves, shake and flower of the marijuana plant. The best hash is made using only buds as it is the part of the plant that has the highest concentration of cannabinoid-rich trichomes. The plant material can be cured, dried, fresh or fresh-frozen; depending on the preparation method you choose. In order to ensure you end up with a high calibre hash, it is important to select superior quality cannabis to start with. There are several methods to hash-making, which we will discuss in some more detail below. Each method delivers a slightly different variant of hash. Charas hash is the most common and is fragrant, spicy and aromatic; whereas bubble hash delivers a crisp and clean experience.

Good quality cannabis intended for DIY hash

    PREPARATION METHODS

    Charas Hash

Charas is the name given to hashish that has been hand-rolled and thought to have originated from the Indian subcontinent and Jamaica. This variation is most probably the oldest method used to make hash. Charas have played an integral role in the culture, tradition and rituals of certain sects of the Hindu religion for thousands of years.

    Ancient Indian Celebration

Start by washing your hands to ensure you have removed any dirt and oils that may contaminate your hash. You can use fresh cannabis plants, i.e. before it is cured, or you could opt to use fresh-frozen plant materials. The process of freezing the cannabis makes it easier to harvest the trichomes. Roll the cannabis between your palms in a circular motion, applying moderate pressure, until a thick black resin forms on your hands. Scrape the resin from your hands and repeat the process until all the resin has been extracted from the plant material. This could seem like a long and tedious process with a small yield, but the upside is that you do not need any specific equipment or supplies.

    Scissor Hash

If you have ever grown your own marijuana plants and reaped the harvest will attest to the resin left behind on your trimming scissors. Simply collect the accumulated resin every now and then to build your hash-stash and keep your trimmer snipping smoothly.

    Boot Hash

Yes, you can make your own DIY hash in your shoe! This is a relatively undemanding way of making a small amount of quality hash. Firstly, tightly wrap about 2g of cannabis in parchment paper and secure the parcel with packaging tape. Use a pin to pierce the bud bundle, press out as much air as possible and then reseal it.

Make DIY hash in your Shoe

Secondly, place the pot package in the heel of a hard-soled shoe, slip on those boots and practise your catwalk strut for at least 30 minutes. Your weight will administer pressure as you walk up and down, the warmth of your body and the friction caused in your shoe will heat the parcel and facilitate the hash making process. What do you get when you peel back the layers? Other than being as excited as a kid on Christmas morning, you have a beautiful brown slab of DIY hash waiting for you to tuck in!

    Kief Hash

Kief is the resinous trichomes of cannabis that collects in the corners of your stash container or in the compartment in your herb grinder destined for the very job. You can make kief by rubbing loose cured cannabis through a fine sieve or even invest in industrial style equipment to process larger quantities of bud at a time. The kief can then be heat pressed into hash coins. If you do not have a pollen press you could opt for any of the hash making procedures mentioned here. You could decide to get your hands dirty and make Charas, or perhaps you will have a go at strutting your stuff, catwalk-style and stomp that bundle into the hash brick you know it can be.

    Rosin Hash

When you apply heat, more substantial than body heat, and pressure to cannabis you get Rosin Hash. It is a pure form of extract that is similar to shatter in appearance. One method of making extracting rosin for DIY hash is to place a small amount of cannabis in the fold of a sheet of parchment paper. Then use a flat-iron hair straightener to apply some medium heated pressure for a few seconds. The golden coloured liquid can then be collected for your dabbing pleasure. Repeat the process until there is no more rosin goodness left in the plant material.

The rosin could be rolled into a joint or you could make a marijuana masterpiece by covering the outside of a rolled joint in some ganja goo before rolling it in dry kief. You could also use a standard household clothing iron on low heat or wrap the parcel in a tea towel and press it into a warm pan using a spatula, flipping it over every 15 seconds.

DIY Hash - apply heat and pressure with iron

Whichever method you choose; to apply heat and pressure to your cannabis, be sure not to burn the rosin when it melts and seeps out of the plant matter.

    PROCESSES TO PLAN FOR

    Planning to make DIY Hash

The following two methods for DIY hash requires some equipment and materials you might not have laying around at home. The items are relatively easy to track down online or at your local shopping centre. Both Ice Water Hash, also known as Bubble Hash, and Dry Ice Hash render an excellent quality hash. These hash variations have an impeccable texture and melt-ability, meaning there will be absolutely no plant material in your rig’s banger once you have taken your hit.

    Ice Water Hash

The first step to making DIY hash using the Ice Water method; is to blend the marijuana plant material with ice water, for one minute. Then pour the liquid into a silkscreen lined glass jar. The trichomes will have separated from the plant matter and fall through the silkscreen into the jar. Allow the mixture to settle for at least an hour before carefully pouring off and discarding ⅔ of the water, be cautious of losing your newly collected trichomes in the bottom of the jar. Refill the jar with ice water, wait five minutes and repeat the process three more times.

Now that all of the resin glands have collected in the jar, use a coffee filter to strain the water and then squeeze out as much of the excess water as possible before leaving the hash to dry. Spread the wet mixture into a thin layer on parchment paper to expose the maximum amount of surface area and ensure your hash dries properly.

    Dry Ice Hash

Dry Ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide that is colder than water ice, does not leave any residue as it evaporates and is colourless and odourless. BE AWARE – Dry ice is extreme cold (around 78 C) and could cause frostbite injuries if not handled with the proper protective gear.

The dry ice process is similar to that of Ice Water Hash. The dry ice freezes the resin glands, making it easier to separate from the plant material when it is mechanically agitated. If you can get your hands on dry ice; put a few pellets in a container with a lid along with your cannabis, firmly grip the container with a pair of oven mitts and give it a proper shake. Andre 3000 from Outkast shaking a polaroid picture while singing Hey Ya, kind of shaking. The next step is similar to the dry sieve process when extracting kief, rub the material through a sieve hovering over parchment paper to catch the trichomes you just worked so hard for. Once the kief is dry it can be pressed together or hand-rolled.

    SMOKIN’!

It was only once tobacco was recognised as a smokable crop that hash cigarettes and hash joints became the preferred method of consumption in the 1500s. Before that hashish was consumed as an edible, especially in Muslim regions with a rich history in hash production and consumption. Consumption of hash in the east was generally by drinking Bhang, a cannabis drink that is prepared with a base of Charas hash, or smoking the hash by packing it on an ash bed in clay chillum, directly heating it and inhaling the smoke. Even though the consumption of marihuana, kief, hash and Bhang is against the law in India; it still has great traditional, cultural and spiritual relevance.

    Hash rolled into a joint

Today hash is most commonly vaped using a dab rig, e-nail or portable vaporizer, incorporated into a joint or blunt,  sprinkled over a packed pipe, bong or bubbler or smoked by itself. Do not let anybody tell you how to smoke hash, experiment and incorporate it as you please! It is possible to get high from hash when it has been consumed as an edible but could lead to intense and prolonged psychoactive effects. So approach hashish with caution, remember the golden rule – start low and go slow.

    EFFECTS

The effects hash has on your body and mind is basically the same as when you smoke standard cured marijuana flowers, with an added kick! Remember hash is a cannabis concentrate and has a much higher level of cannabinoids and terpenes. Start by incorporating a small amount of crumbed DIY hash with your bud and evaluate your experience. Once you have experienced the high, you can adjust the amount of hash according to your desired potency.

    BE THE JUDGE

    The best Neon sign

The best quality indicator for hash is the smell, high quality hash smells fragrant and aromatic, whereas low-quality hash will have a distinct mouldy or musty aroma. Hash that is greener in colour may contain unwanted plant materials like Chlorophyll, deteriorating the quality. If the hash has a sticky consistency it has most probably been deliberately contaminated with oils to increase the weight and inflate the value.

    HOW HIGH

Stoned and wondering who you are

Are you new to cannabis and wondering how hashish affects you? When you take a toke and fill your lungs with cannabis smoke, the cannabinoids are absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs. When the THC, the psychotropic cannabinoid in cannabis, crosses the brain-barrier and attaches to the CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. You start feeling it; your body relaxes, your cognitive sensories are heightened and if you are lucky you might experience a fit of laughter or uncontrollable hunger. Young Frenchman Launches The Country’s First Cannabis Wine In Bordeaux

A young Frenchman has launched the country’s first wine infused with cannabis in the heart of the Bordeaux wine-growing region. The mastermind behind the cannabis wine is Raphael De Pablo, the 28-year-old creator of the Burdi W brand. The wine is made from locally Petit Verdot grapes and infused with cannabidiol (CBD), one of the key substances found in cannabis.

While the intoxicating THC cannabis component remains strictly banned in France, the use of CBD is not only legal but has been credited with some medicinal properties, including treating both the symptoms and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease and lowering blood pressure in senior citizens.

“It adds a relaxing effect to the classic effect of alcohol,” De Pablo told the French press, who said he came up with the idea for his brand in 2018.

While his product is legal and certified “from the seed to the finished product” it cannot claim to be wine, and has to be marketed as a “flavoured wine-based drink.”

De Pablo says a little touch of blackcurrant balances out the strong CBD taste, adding that hitting the right mix is one of the more complex parts of making this drink.

De Pablo’s company Burdi W has attracted more than 1,000 backers in a crowdfunding campaign and so far 8,000 bottles of wine have been sold at 34 euros each.

Most of the buyers are in France but orders are arriving from other European countries as well as the United States, where CBD-infused wine is already popular, but also very pricy.

“Our aim is to reconcile young people with wine”, said De Pablo, with the design of the bottles — featuring engraved corks and a marijuana leaf on glow-in-the-dark labels — targeted at a young, sophisticated audience.

Reactions in the wine community meanwhile range from bafflement to rejection.

“Wine is wine. I don’t understand why you would add mood-enhancing substances to wine, there is already alcohol in it,” Diane Cauvin, a winemaker, told AFP.

The influential Terre de Vins wine website, however, deemed the drink promising after their tasting notes described the wine as “vegetable notes that recall the aromatics of a craft beer”.

Stoner Life Hacks For The Cannabis Consumer In The 21st Century

Few of life’s pleasures are as rewarding as winding down with a fat joint with a cold beer in hand and the sweet sounds of your favourite music legend in the background. For me at least! Perhaps you prefer smoking a bong or vaporizer? Maybe you prefer watching Adult Swim or playing video games? Whatever your ritual is around consuming cannabis or the level of experience you have; accidents can happen! Life can get in the way and you may run into some hurdles along the way. We have compiled a list of the ultimate Stoner Life Hacks to keep handy for whatever life throws your way.

Even though every Stoned Citizen has their own tips and tricks they swear by, sometimes you might find yourself in a bind and struggling to wrap, light or actually smoke your marijuana. This list of ultimate Stoner Life Hacks is sure to have a solution for any problem you might come across in your cannabis endeavours.

    STONER LIFE HACKS

    Take A Whiff
Take a Whiff - Pineapple in a bicycle basket

Cannabis enhances your senses! The Olfactory receptors in your nasal passages are linked to your endocannabinoid system, which is the receptors in the brain that interacts with the cannabinoids in marijuana. Tropical fruits will smell a whole lot more amazing and even enhance your high. Let’s be reel, who does not want to be stoned to the bone smelling and eating a fragrant tropical fruit? Mangos, papaya or pineapple? Take your pick and enjoy the sensory overload.

    Cottonmouth Jo
Cottonmouth Jo - Stoned Citizen with lollipop

Your mouth is bone dry and your tongue is stuck to the roof of your mouth, swallowing is difficult and might even seem impossible at this stage. When the THC in cannabis attaches to the submandibular glands, the bilateral salivary glands in the face, it stops the glands from receiving neurotransmitter messages to produce more saliva. Simply chewing gum or sucking on a lollipop, or any other hard candy will stimulate additional saliva production to combat the dryness in your mouth! Sour sweets are our favourite to get a good drool going!

    Suck It Up
Suck It Up - Cleaning in progress sign

From the moment you have ground up your cannabis flowers to when you have lit the green, there are a bunch of disastrous scenarios that could leave your cannabis all over the floor. Do not fret, pull a sock or stocking over the end of your vacuum cleaner hose and suck up the ground flowers. The sock keeps the weed from going into the vacuum and once you have something in place to catch the weed, simply turn it off! Just like that, you get a second chance to roll that joint.

    Zesty Refresh
Zesty Refresh - Orange and lemon zest

Sometimes you just do not make it through your stash before it starts drying out a bit to much. We believe it is good practice to keep cannabis in a glass jar in a cool dark place to keep it as fresh as possible. If you notice your cannabis flowers are a bit to dry, this stoner life hack is for you. Add a few slivers of zest from any citrus fruit to your stash jar with the dried herb. The water molecules in the fruit peels will contribute to a unique micro-climate in your stash jar, breathing some new zesty life into your dry bud!

    Every Last Crumb
    Stoner Life Hacks Kief Extraction

Kief is a trichome rich cannabis dust that collects in the intricacies of your grinder and in the kief collection chamber. The dank dust has a whole bunch of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that you definitely do not want to miss out on! It could turn into quite a daunting task to collect all the sticky kief and actually use it. Placing your grinder in the freezer overnight will make the trichomes more brittle and it will be a whole lot easier for it to separate from the metal. Not only is it easier to harvest the kief but you will get a bigger yield.

    Zero Waste Policy
Stoner Life Hacks Save Your Stems

Be sure to collect most of the trim, shake, sticks and stems during your cannabis adventures. Once you have filled a small jar with these “off-cuts” you could decarboxylate it, top it off with pure grain alcohol and make your very own Green Dragon Tincture. Or perhaps you will make cannabis-infused coconut oil and try your hand at making edibles? You could even brew a pinch with your favourite loose leaf tea for the ultimate High tea.

    Juice Cleanse
Stoner Life Hacks Lemon Juice to Clean Bongs

When your bong has seen better days, and you reminisce of the days when you could still see through your glass smoking device. Maybe it is your first bong and you are yet to be imparted with the wisdom of weed wizardry. Whatever the reason, stop procrastinating and show that baby some love! Lemon juice and warm water work wonders to remove the resin and leave that glass as sparkly as the day you got it. No special chemicals or cleaning devices. Simply allow the lemon water to break down the resin, pour off the dirty water, rinse and use pipe cleaners and paper towels to wipe it down.

    Bee Resourceful Honey
Bee Resourceful Honey Fingers In Honey Pot

Honey has been around for thousands of years, prehistoric humans were very aware of its medicinal properties. You might be in a tight spot when you reach for the honey pot, but you might also be in a great creative space. You can use honey to stick down the ends of stubborn unravelling joints or create a Honey Blunt masterpiece. A joint will burn slower and more evenly by rubbing a bit of honey on the outside of the joint. It is delicious, smooth and no more canoeing joints! Spice up your honey joint with a decent kief dusting or try your hand at rolling a rose petal joint. The most delicious of all the stoner life hacks.

    Munch Not
Munch Not, chew gum to keep hunger at bay

When the weed is rocking and the munchies come knocking! Most stoners have often become a slave to their tummies, funnelling food in weird combinations down their throats, desperately trying to fill the gaping hole. The munchies are a common phenomenon as THC stimulates the part of your brain that tells you, YOU ARE HUNGRY. To make matters worse, cannabis makes food taste and smell even better as it increases your cognitive perceptions! If you have a need to avoid constantly stuffing your face; chewing on some gum or sucking on mints will help keep the hunger at bay! Otherwise, try making this Baguette Pizza recipe to fill satisfy all of your cravings.

    Pennywise
    Pennywise, pill container and cannabis

There could be many different scenarios you may find yourself in when you need to break down your cannabis flowers before rolling a joint or packing a bowl. Maybe your grinder is in the freezer as a part of Operation Kief Extraction? Whatever the reason, if you have misplaced your grinder there are a few options. Reach for a small glass and a pair of scissors, a chopping board and a knife or your lucky coin. Loosely break the cannabis from the stems and place it in an empty pill bottle, along with your lucky coin. As you shake it about the coin will start breaking down the cannabis as it knocks about inside the pill container. An analogue process that may take some time, but it works!

    An Apple A Day
    Apple Pipe by Stoned Citizen

Many stoners have been in a situation without a smoking device or rolling equipment. Cannabis consumers have thought of new, innovative and creative ways to spark up that holy herb over the years. You might have heard of a gravity bong, perforated a stepped-in cooldrink can or rolled up with a page from the good book. Regardless of whether you are in a crisis or looking to learn a few party tricks, look no further than your fruit and vegetable basket! You can create a world-class fruit bong using a few common household tools. Once you have mastered basic pipe or one-hitter style pipes, move on to bigger and better designs!

    Pot Press
Stoner Life Hacks Homemade Rosin Press

Cannabis rosin is great for dabbing and has been making waves as of late in the cannabis community. By using a solventless extraction technique anybody can make high-quality hash oil! You will need to have a hair straightener, some parchment paper and your broken down cannabis flower or harvested kief. Place the cannabis in the fold of a sheet of parchment paper and apply light pressure with the medium-hot hair iron. The rosin will start sizzling within a few seconds as it melts out of the plant material. Be careful, it is hot! Grab your dabbing tool and spark up the torch, it is time to dab your very own homemade rosin.

Few are as creative as a stoner with an idea, let us know which are your favourite Stoner Life Hacks, and how it has helped you out of a potentially sticky situation in the past.
