The latest discovery by Swiss researchers suggests that marijuana was first domesticated in northwest China ~12 000 years ago. Although there is not a lot of recorded history to verify these facts, what remains clear is that humans have taken advantage of the medicinal benefits of cannabis for a long, LONG time!

Anecdotal evidence exists that CBD has been known to alleviate some symptoms of memory loss conditions, improve focus and enhance brain performance. A recent study conducted at the University College London set out to analyze the effects of CBD on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and how it impacts memory function. Using a technique called Arterial Spin Labelling researchers have discovered that CBD increases blood flow to key regions of the brain associated with memory function. Although this is a major step forward, it is clear that further research needs to be conducted to better understand the therapeutic potential of CBD. And of course, the other phytochemicals that naturally occur in cannabis.

UNDERSTANDING MEMORY FUNCTION

Memory function refers to the brain’s capability to encode, store and retrieve information as and when it is needed. It is comparable to an information processing system with both definitive and implied functions. The sensory processor uses chemical and physical stimuli to perceive information from the outside world, which is then encoded (or retrieved) by the working memory before it is eventually categorically stored in the long-term memory. Being able to retain and recall information has allowed humans to develop identities, relationships, languages, systems and processes. An individual with memory loss might not be able to remember a name or word and have difficulty recalling information in logical order.

CBD FOR IMPROVED MEMORY FUNCTION

CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is the main phytochemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its cannabinoid counterpart THC, CBD has no psychotropic properties – meaning it can not make you High. However, it is a natural anti-inflammatory that has been shown to improve cognitive performance by mitigating cognitive degeneration and oxidative stress and triggering neuron growth. Sign Language Of The Time – Creating An Inclusive Cannabis Industry That Is Accessible To Persons Who Are Deaf

There are more than 70 million deaf people around the world, of which 80% live in developing countries. These individuals communicate using a combination of sign language, lipreading or interpreter applications. The word “deaf” includes all persons who do not have the ability to hear, are hard of hearing (HoH) or have significantly reduced hearing. When deaf individuals identify as “Deaf” with a capitalized D, they identify with Deaf culture and consider themselves part of the Deaf community.

September is Global Deaf Awareness month, the observation is set to remind the hearing community of their responsibility to ensure accessibility for persons who are d/Deaf or HoH. A new day is dawning for stoned citizens the world over with the sporadic legalization of medical and adult-use cannabis. The emerging industry holds countless opportunities for anybody from cultivators and creators, to entrepreneurs and enthusiasts of all kinds. These opportunities come with great responsibility to ensure the industry is inclusive and accessible to persons who communicate using sign language.

Promoting inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities among employees, suppliers and customers provides a competitive advantage and opens up a wealth of opportunities that did not exist before.

SIGN LANGUAGE

Sign languages are fully developed vocabularies based on a system of hand gestures, their placement relative to the upper body, fingerspelling, body posture and facial expressions. Like any spoken language; sign languages are specific to their country of origin, influenced by popular culture and have distinct dialects and accents.

International Sign Language is a simpler version of sign language. It allows deaf individuals from across the globe to communicate with one other during meetings, when travelling and while socializing.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES

23 September was officially declared to be the International Day of Sign Languages by the United Nations in 2018. The September date was chosen to memorialize the day in 1951 that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was established. The observation aims to raise awareness for deaf persons, the challenges they face in their day-to-day lives and celebrating the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of deaf people and other sign language users.

The theme for International Day of Sign Languages 2021 is “We sign for human rights”, as per the WFD. The motif is set to encourage deaf and hearing people from around the world to work together to promote the right to use sign languages as a primary language in everyday life. Making day-to-day life more accessible for persons with hearing disabilities by acknowledging their human rights.

ISSUE AT HAND

The sporadic uptake in countries that are to some degree legalizing responsible adult-use cannabis is exciting for most. However, the emerging cannabis industry is in danger of leaving behind individuals who are d/Deaf or HoH. Persons with impaired hearing who communicate using sign languages are severely underrepresented within the evolving marijuana market. Most sign languages do not have signs for words like “Endocannabinoid”, “Tetrahydrocannabinoid” or “Decarboxylation” – creating a huge communication and education disparity. A d/Deaf or HoH person will most probably not be able to communicate with a budtender, store assistant or medical professional about cannabis or its medicinal benefits. Leaving them confused, overwhelmed and frustrated, with a list of unanswered questions.

Hearing people, or those who do not communicate using sign language, take for granted the frustration that d/Deaf or HoH people have to endure on a daily basis. Not just in and around the cannabis industry – we all have a responsibility to ensure our business realms are inclusive enough to accommodate people with all kinds of accessibility requirements.

HELPING HAND

The systematic legalization of cannabis opens the door for government-funded initiatives to ensure sign languages are developed to include words and phrases from developing industries. Creating a comprehensive glossary of terms in sign language to remove communication barriers.

It remains our responsibility to create a more inclusive marketplace, from offering staff sensitivity training in assisting d/Deaf or HoH people to requiring employees to learn fundamental sign language to facilitate a basic conversation. Employers within the cannabis industry should strongly consider employing d/Deaf or HOH individuals. A hearing-impaired staff member will bridge the communication gap for others who communicate using sign language, educate their work colleagues and ensure accessibility standards are upheld.

An accessible experience is sure to boost the return on investment, enhanced reputation within the disabled community and improve overall customer service. This will also increase opportunities and resources for d/Deaf or HoH individuals, facilitate cultural inclusion and demand participation in decision making.

Their services include expert advice and guidance on deaf recruitment, workplace experience and skills training. The non-profit recently launched a free mobile application to bridge the communication gap between deaf and hearing people as well as promote learning South African Sign Language as an additional language.

Sustainable Growing Practices For Home Growers To Help Preserve The Ozone Layer

The prospect of growing one’s own cannabis at home could motivate just about anybody to get the ball rolling! The first step would be doing research, becoming familiar with cannabis jargon, techniques and sustainable growing practices. Next, based on the specifications outlined in the grow plan; sourcing equipment, consumables and genetics. And finally, starting the actual process when life springs to action as your seeds germinate.

Perhaps you are a seasoned grower capable of maintaining a sizable ganja grow operation with relative ease? Or you recently enjoyed success and are currently noting adjustments to consider for the next grow project. Regardless of where you fit into the spectrum, you have a responsibility to responsibly cultivate cannabis by adopting sustainable growing practices and actively working to mitigate our carbon footprint.

Here is our list of sustainable growing practices that are easily adopted by home growers of any scale, regardless of experience. The mission is simple; significantly reduce the environmental impact, mitigate residual carbon emissions and get high doing it!

ENERGY

LIGHTING

Cultivating cannabis requires a lot of light; pot plants that are grown outdoors rely on the natural energy from the sun. On the other hand, indoor plants require powerful artificial lighting that can easily be controlled to manipulate the growth cycle and guarantee the plants grow to their full potential. A small entry-level 300W grow light can consume up to 350kWh of energy during the life cycle of a plant. In South Africa, considering the latest price hikes by Eskom, it amounts to around R700 in electricity expenses alone.

Standard grow light solutions have come a long way in recent years, companies are constantly developing new technologies to deliver the best quality light with much lower energy input. Switching to an LED lighting solution will reduce energy consumption and minimize the amount of energy that is converted to heat. These specialized lights are fully adjustable, requires little to no maintenance and has an extended lifespan. A grow room with large windows offers the opportunity to substitute artificial lighting with natural sunlight whenever possible.

CLIMATE CONTROL

Cannabis plants love warm temperatures and moderate humidity, home growers may choose to rely on other energy-consuming devices to help control the climate in the grow room. These include dehumidifiers, air conditioning, exhaust systems to draw hot air out of the room, fans to keep air circulating and automation applications. A 70 W floor fan will consume 140kWh of electricity running 24 hours a day during the life cycle of your pot plant. A single floor fan can add up to R280 to the cost of your home grow, most growers rely on multiple devices for climate control.

The flow of air in a grow room is important to cultivate happy and healthy plants, CO2 depleted air can cause nutrient lockout and attract pests and pathogens. Home growers can regulate temperatures and humidity fluctuations by strategically positioning plants and relying on natural airflow. A passive intake system will inherently supply the grow room with fresh air while clearing out stagnant air.

CALCULATE KILOWATT-HOURS

Calculating the amount of energy a device will consume during a plant’s life cycle is fairly easy. Simply multiply the device wattage by the number of operational hours, then divide the amount by 1000; to calculate the kilowatt-hours.

kWh = Power [Watts] X Time [Hours] / 1000

Convert this to currency by multiplying the kWh by the cost per kWh, as per your local power utility.

NUTRIENTS

Cannabis requires a variety of micro and macro-nutrients in different ratios throughout its life cycle, essential to promote healthy development. Home growers are spoilt for choice when it comes to nutrient brands, each promising an even bigger and better harvest. The irresponsible use of these chemical products leads to nutrient pollution, which poses major environmental and human health issues. Rivers, lakes and oceans are flooded with nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff; causing accelerated algae growth that is severely detrimental to the delicate ecosystems.

Growers have a responsibility to adopt sustainable practices that compensate for the use of synthesized nutrients. Incorporating perlite and vermiculite into healthy soil increases water retention and ultimately reduces harmful runoff. Reverse osmosis is a purification process that removes environmentally damaging chemicals from harvested runoff water.

Natural fertilisers like guano and organic compost have all the nutrients pot plants require, and are far more environmentally friendly than the artificial equivalent. Homemade compost tea is the most sustainable fertiliser that supports the growth of microorganisms, promotes plant growth and offers protection against pests.

Eliminate pests like spider mites and leaf miners with an environmentally friendly DIY insecticide. Simply mix together equal parts vegetable oil and diluted organic soap water, shake vigorously and spray away! Apply the magical mixture directly onto unwanted insects and infested leaves, avoiding any forming buds.

WATER

Not all cannabis strains are the same, smaller plants may consume less water than their sizable cousins. An archetypal outdoor plant will guzzle up on average 3.5 litres of water a day to produce 450g of smokable flower, amounting to ~400 litres during its life cycle! Stressed plants are thirsty! Maintaining a favourable climate in the grow room will ensure the plants do not consume more water than they need to sustain normal growth.

Environmentally conscious home growers should implement sustainable growing practices like irrigating with condensation or rainwater. Hydroponics and aquaponics could be considered as alternative methods for cannabis cultivation, these contemporary systems use less water than soil systems.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Sustainably growing ganja includes an obligation to adapt responsible waste management practices. Inorganic waste like plastic, glass and metal must always be recycled or creatively UPcycled for reuse. All biodegradable waste should be periodically incorporated into a compost project to revitalize tired soil and make nutrient and microorganism rich compost tea. Alternatively, there is an eco-warrior out there who would be grateful to take any organic trimmings off your hands.

Give preference to brands that use eco-friendly alternatives, are actively involved with recycling initiatives and invests in community development. Demand products that are responsibly manufactured and ethically sourced.

Each and every person has a responsibility to contribute towards efforts aimed at preserving the environment, developing sustainable alternatives and adopting regenerative practices. South Park was created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for Comedy Central, the American animated sitcom premiered in the United States on 13 August 1997. A total of 309 episodes have been aired over 23 seasons in the quarter of a century since its debut. The show has consistently earned the highest ratings for any basic cable program.

SOUTH PARK

South Park follows the wild adventures of four friends; Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny, in and around their hometown of the same name. The adult-orientated program has become infamous for its hard-boiled hilarity, shock value, sacrilegious satire and ingenious use of expletives. The episodes of South Park are often themed around global hot-topics, snarky social expositions, in-depth analysis and current pop-cultural citations.

A tragic death occurs in South Park when Clyde forgets to put the toilet seat down. The first time he left the seat up; his mother Betsy had narrowly escaped falling in. Regardless of the very public scolding he received, Clyde again forgets to return the seat to its rightful position. This time Betsy was not as lucky, she falls into the toilet, causing a severe suction that eventually rips out her organs. Her death sparks the foundation of the Toilet Safety Administration (TSA), a regulatory body tasked with implementing regulations for people’s toilets. The safety regulations required ALL toilets to be fitted with a safety belt and security cameras, and be subject to surprise inspections while in use. Reverse Cowgirl takes on the classic battle of the sexes debate; do men have to leave the toilet seat down? Or does the responsibility fall on the women to ensure the seat is down before they sit?

Cartman tricks Butters into believing that the world as he sees it is actually a VR simulation. Geared with a set of virtual reality goggles, Butters is coaxed into believing an elaborate delusion by the voice of Cartmen via a walkie-talkie connected to Butter’s headphones. Truly believing his actions would have no consequences, Butters goes on a “virtual” rampage that starts with him punching his father in the dick. He then goes full Grand Theft Auto by stealing a car and assaulting a sex worker – as only a GTA protagonist could. Grounded Vindaloop goes full sci-fi; leaving the crew wondering what is real and what is a simulation. A Matrix-inspired paradox much!

A kid, Marcus Preston, from South Park Elementary is celebrating his birthday. A character costumed as Chuck E. Cheese is hired as the entertainment for his party but delivers a horrible performance. Next thing you know the mascot is bent in half hurling the content of his stomach, before he dies on the spot of an overdose.

Motivated by the recent overdose deaths of multiple costumed characters, Marcus decides to take vengeance on whoever is responsible. After he learns that all of the recent deceased costumed characters had Hummels stashed in their anal cavities, Marcus is determined to expose the source. Hummels and Heroin parodies the opioid epidemic in the United States, and compares life in a retirement community to that of a prison captive’s experience in jail. Granpa Marsh is having a hard time as he adjusts to the prison-like conditions at the assisted living facility. His fate changes when Stan helps his grandpa grow his collection of Hummels to dethrone the current drug kingpin and become the “top bitch”.

The students at South Park Elementary school are being introduced to yaoi, a Japanese art form that celebrates homoerotic relationships between male characters. In a bid to educate the students about Asian culture, PC Principal and Wendy host the assembly in honour of the expanding Asian community in South Park. The presentation is filled with pictures of manga-style drawings of Tweek and Craig occupied in homoerotic and homosexual activities. In his office, PC Principal tells Tweek and Craig that if they are indeed engaged in a relationship, they should have affirmative consent between them.

Stan has a discussion with his father about his confusion as to why “the Asians” casually decide who to portray as gay in yaoi. In an attempt to appear politically correct, although he knows nothing about the art form, Randy concerts that Asians have the power to decide who is gay and who is not.

Season 22 Episode 9 was aired for the first time on 5 December 2018, Unfulfilled has been rated 7.6/10 on IMDb.

South Park is getting ready for the town’s annual bike parade and nobody is more excited than Butters. Determined to win the first prize, he purchases a bunch of decorative accessories online to increase his chances of winning. Stephen Scotch recently started working at the Amazon fulfilment centre as a floor manager. However, he is worried his family’s habitual need to order from the online behemoth is driving them into irrecoverable debt.

Meanwhile, at the fufillment warehouse; a worker accidentally gets grabbed by a sorting robot and shoved into a small box. Enraged that Amazon maintains the accident was caused by “human error”, the other boxers go on strike. The shutdown causes major delays, which does not sit well with the residents of South Park, as the arrival of the Amazon filfillment warehouse forced most of the local stores to close their doors. A counter-protest is arranged by a bunch of townies to encourage the Amazon boxers to return to their posts, and fulfil their orders that have been held up.

#1 PUT IT DOWN

Season 21 Episode 2 has been scored 7.8/10 on IMDB, Put It Down premiered on 20 September 2017.

Motivated by the apatheticness of the townies, Tweek decides to raise awareness about the growing tensions between the US and North Korea. He delivers an emotionally charged performance during assembly, where he warns of the mounting political pressure between the two countries. Craig is egged on by the boys to do something about his boyfriend’s anxiety, but Tweek fails to compose his trepidation.

President Garrison aggravates the situation with a queue of militant tweets specifically directed at the North Korean leader; Kim Jong-un. In an attempt to de-escalate the tension, Tweek decided to send a batch of cupcakes to the North Korean commander-in-chief. Tweek is delighted to find out that the baked goods managed to de-escalate the situation. His contentedness is short-lived when the Trump-esque President Garrison alleges that Tweek most probably defecated in the batter.

Meanwhile, Cartman falsely claims that he and Heidi have only gotten back together because she threatened to commit suicide if he didn’t. Cartman’s attempt to draw attention to his planned suicide is vetoed by PC Principal, as the school administration already decided to raise awareness for drivers distracted by the president’s tweets.

Cannabis Dispensaries Embrace Their Inner Jimmy Buffett With Shops That Look Like Margaritaville

The legalization of cannabis in the United States is hitting main streets across the country. The growth of the marijuana business has led to shop fronts that are flamboyant and kitsch-looking. The McBride Company has been steadily translating its themed environment design to the burgeoning retail cannabis business. The interdisciplinary design firm has designed dozens of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurants as well as the Margaritaville resorts.

Firm founder Pat McBride says the future of cannabis design is not so different from an extravagant Margaritaville.

“The initial dispensaries looked more like a pharmacy or GNC or an Apple store. The connection to the history, the music, and the story of cannabis was basically eliminated,” McBride says.

McBride understands why the first dispensaries took a more conservative design approach in the early days of decriminalization, but decided that cannabis shouldn’t turn its back on its counter-culture roots and embraced the wacky side of weed in his designs.

Grass Monkey in Maine is an eccentric and fluorescent store, with an emphasis on graffiti art and monkey-themed sculptures and product displays. Lush green plants spill from shelves, with oversize banana accents on the main product display. The store does all the things the business needs. It makes customers feel comfortable and enable workers to guide stoners through the purchasing experience but tries to make it more than just a transaction. The dispensary has a consumption lounge and live music venue, with cocktail bar-like seating and mood lighting similar to a nightclub.

Margaritaville is also getting into the game, with its new Coral Reefer brand cannabis stores that embrace the smokier side of the Jimmy Buffett island lifestyle.

S’mores are a traditional campfire treat that is made by sandwiching toasted marshmallows and chocolate between two graham crackers. These delicious treats are so popular in the United States, Americans annually celebrate National S’more Day on August 10.

Pressing two biscuits together with a molten marshmallow and chocolate centre was first documented in the early 1920s. Stoner S’mores are quick, easy and delicious! Although S’mores are traditionally made by toasting the marshmallows over a campfire, they can be made anywhere over an open flame. The marshmallow should be blistered and golden brown on the outside with a gooey melted centre. It is important to secure the marshmallow with a metal or wooden skewer, molten marshmallows can cause some serious burns, so be careful! The roasted marshmallow is then sandwiched between two graham crackers along with cannabis-infused chocolate sauce!

Cannabis Crème Brûlée – A Creamy Custard Dessert With A Hard Caramelized Top To Get Baked On

Dessert means something different to every individual, greatly impacted by culture, tradition and personal preference. I often find myself daydreaming of the decadent dessert that is made up of a chilled baked custard centre and a delicate caramel crust; the Crème brûlée. Also known as burned, burnt or Trinity cream; this dessert is a true mark of elegance and one of the hallmark desserts of Paris.

Admittedly, making this decadent dessert at home can be relatively intimidating, but it does not have to be! We have formulated an easy-to-follow recipe to make the perfect DIY Crème brûlée that is infused with cannabis, of course – Crème brû-Yay!

CREME BRULEE

Crème brûlée is a French name that translates to burnt cream is a delicious dessert that has a rich custard base and is topped with a thin hard caramel layer, almost always served chilled. The pudding portion of this dessert should be trembling and tender, yet be rich and creamy. In contrast, the hard caramel layer should be evenly torched and distributed over the entire surface. When digging into this dessert the first step is to crack the caramelized layer with the back of a spoon and then digging straight down to get a spoonful of set custard centre and cracked caramel.

The origin and history of the dessert called crème brûlée is vastly disputed, the earliest known recipe appears in the 1691 cookbook; Cuisinier Royal er Bourgeois by François Massialot. Some authors have suggested that it was inspired by the Crema Catalana, a virtually identical dessert with Spanish origins that date back to the 14th century. Crema Catalana first appeared in a cookbook in 1745 by Juan de Altamiras. The key difference between these similar desserts is that the Crema Catalana is made with milk and thickened with cornflour, whereas the French counterpart does not require a thickening agent as it is made with cream.

The United States celebrates these delectable baked custard desserts on National Crème Brûlée Day annually on July 27. Although the exact origin of the baked custard dessert is shrouded in mystery, Sirio Maccioni is said to be responsible for the popularization of the mouth-watering dessert in the USA during the 1980s. Celebrate this day of decadence the right way, by making your own crème brûlée. Or do a quick internet search for “Creme brulee near me” and go on a dessert run.

There are a number of easy-to-follow recipes to make Crème brûlée at home, some recipes are specifically designed to be made in a crockpot, other recipes are designed to be dairy-free.
