Happy World Martini Day, or more specifically National Martini Day in the USA, a day dedicated to the observation of a cocktail that has stood the test of time! Classically, a Martini is made with two parts London Dry Gin stirred cold with one part Vermouth and served straight-up in a cocktail glass. Hemingway had this to say about the old-timey libation: “I’ve never tasted anything so cool and clean…They make me feel civilized,”. Marijuana martinis are easy to make, they taste delicious and they are a great way to get your appetite jump-started before dinner. Celebrate Martini Day this year by indulging in a delicious cannabis-infused version of the classic.
Although the exact origin story of the martini is clouded in mystery, there are a few fables and tall tales about who and where the very first of its kind was served. The first variations of Martini style cocktails are said to date as far back as the early 1860s, however, the first written account was made by Jerry Thomas in the 1887 edition of his: Bartender’s Guide, How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks. A year later the “Martini Cocktail” appeared in Harry Johnson’s Bartender’s Manual, the recipe included “half a wine glass” each of gin and vermouth. As the years went on and pallets developed the ratio of vermouth to gin got smaller and smaller. By 1922 the standard ratio of gin to vermouth in a classic martini was 2:1, except when making a Reverse Martini then the ratio is swopped.
The Three-Martini Lunch became popular during the martini’s heyday in the roaring twenties. Cosmopolitan business people, corporate creatives and prominent politicians would be seated for lunch along the rich and famous to enjoy at least three martinis with their afternoon meal. By the 1970s the 3-Martini Lunch had become a daily ritual for advertising executives on Madison Avenue, seemingly to get the creative juices flowing.
SHAKEN OR STIRRED
Most stoned citizens who are familiar with the Action and Thriller movie genres are aware that James Bond is particular about having his martini shaken, and not stirred! As agent 007’s instruction insinuates the difference lies in the method of preparation. Bond’s preference is prepaid by stirring the cocktail’s ingredients in a beaker with ice blocks. Bartenders the world over each have their own opinion on the “proper” way to make a martini, those who advocate for the stirred variant justify their preference to an atomic level. Apparently, when you stir the ingredients together the atoms are elegantly arranged on top of each other, delivering a cleaner and more luxurious experience to the consumer.
The IBA’s recipe for the Classic Martini, listed amongst The Unforgettables, combines 60ml gin with 10ml dry vermouth in a mixing glass with ice cubes. The ingredients are then stirred together until they are well combined and chilled, strained into a martini glass and garnished with a lemon zest twist. The International Bartenders Association is a non-profit association that determines the recipe, method and standards of globally recognised classic cocktails; like the martini, old fashioned and sidecar cocktails.
Apart from the method used to make a martini, the cocktail could be specifically Dry by decreasing the amount of vermouth or Wet by doing the opposite. Make the martini Dirty by adding a measure of olive brine and garnishing the drink with an olive or two. A Gibson Martini is garnished with a pickled cocktail onion instead.
MARIJUANA MARTINI
A standard classic martini could very easily be transformed into a Marijuana Martini by using cannabis-infused gin or vodka to prepare the dank drink. The infused spirit is easy to make at home; simply steep decarboxylated cannabis in the base spirit until most of the terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids are extracted from the plant material. It is extremely important to decarboxylate, or decarb, the cannabis before attempting to infuse it into alcohol or edibles for that matter. The process activates the effects of the naturally occurring molecules like THC, the psychotropic cannabinoid – which is important if you want to get High!
Cannabis is decarboxylated by placing grounded plant material on an oven tray and “baking” it in the oven at 115 C for at least 45 minutes. The next step is to steep the Baked cannabis in the gin or vodka for at least 48 hours.
Call it an addiction, but fudge is that one sugary treat that I would pocket like a kid in a candy store when given the chance. Turns out, I’m not the only “fudged” up citizen with a sweet obsession for the sugar-loaded treat. International Fudge Day is a thing and it gets celebrated annually on 16 June. Giving praise to the origin of the sweet and its many varieties, here are some fun fudge facts to nudge on.
What the fudge?
While the Americans claim fudge as their own invention, some believe it to come from tablet, sugary confection from Scotland, made with sugar, condensed milk and butter. The Household Book of Lady Grisell Baillie was the first to note it in the early 18th century.’

Mamie Eisenhower, the wife of the 34th US President, Ike Eisenhower (1953-61), was a huge fudge fan and even crafted her own recipe – named Mamie’s Million-Dollar Fudge – which included chopped nuts and marshmallow crème.
Biggest Fudge, Ever!
The record for the largest slab of fudge in the world weighed over 2 600 kilograms and was crafted at the Northwest Fudge Factory in Ontario, Canada in 2010. It reportedly took a full week to make and, while the ingredients are not available for this record, the previous holder contained 320kg of butter, 1 270kg of chocolate and 1 155 litres of condensed milk.
There’s A Fudge Festival For Fudgies
Mackinac Island, a tiny 9,8km² island in Michigan in the US, considers itself the fudge capital of the world with 14 fudge shops in the town, and the oldest – Murdick’s Candy Kitchen – dating back to 1887. Every August, the island hosts a Fudge Festival, complete with events like Fudge on the Rocks where local bartenders craft fudge cocktails. Festival-goers are referred to as “fudgies.”
Fudge is not the only sugar-laced delicacy with its own day. On Donut Day, citizens the world over pay tribute by indulging in the many variations of doughnuts.
The global Coronavirus pandemic has changed much of life as we knew it. We washed our hands more, we baked dozens of batches of chocolate chip cookies and sourdough loaves, AND we started working from home. One thing that most people had in common was the lack of space to work, to be creative or simply just to breathe! We take a look at an architect-led business that is researching and developing sustainable plant-based construction materials like Hempcrete, a carbon-negative building material that has been around for thousands of years.

With some basic tools and help from a few friends, you could build your very own Traveller cabin in approximately one week. The 13 square meter cabin turns your extra yard space into a multifunctional sanctuary for anything from a secluded office to a cosy weekend staycation spot or a 420 friendly guesthouse.
Other than some timber joinery, the cabin’s structure is predominantly manufactured with hemp. Hempcrete is a zero-carbon building block that functions as insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling. The interior finishings are manufactured by artisanal craftsmen from local timber sourced from FSC certified forestries. For the exterior facade, you have an option between cedar, corrugated iron and painted lime plastered hempcrete.

Coexist is an architect-led business based in Pennsylvania that offers full turnkey solutions for healthy, simple and sustainable construction. Co-founding husband and wife duo Anastasiya Konopitskaya and Drew Oberholtzer are hell-bent on bringing hemp-based construction into the spotlight. The pair have been building and designing with hempcrete for three years on top of owning and running a regenerative organic farm that doubles as a research and development lab to experiment with plant-based building materials. HEMP
Hemp is a fibrous variety of the cannabis plant that grows rapidly and is believed to have been cultivated since the Neolithic Age in China. The strains used to cultivate hemp for industrial use have a distinct phytochemical structure that does not include THC, the psychotropic cannabinoid responsible for causing the feeling of being high. Hemp is extremely versatile and has come a long way from when it was first spun into fibres approximately 50 000 years ago. Once refined, hemp can be used to make paper, rope, textiles, clothing, bio-plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food items and animal feed.
An ancient Greek writer named Herodotus (~480 BCE) reported that the inhabitants of Scythia, modern-day Central Asia, would often inhale the vapours of hemp seed smoke for recreational pleasure and to fulfil rituals.
The legality of cultivating industrial hemp varies all across the world. Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (ALRRD), Thoko Didiza recently confirmed that legal hemp cultivation may soon be on its way in South Africa. “The department will, with the help of the Department of Justice, as of October 2021, begin issuing and monitoring permits for the production of hemp in South Africa” – Minister Didiza addressed the issue during her department’s budgetary vote.
HEMPCRETE
Hempcrete, aka hemp-lime, is made by combining dry hemp hurd and a hydraulic lime binder with water. The hemp lime mixture is then compacted into block-shaped moulds before it is left to cure. Hempcrete is lightweight, fireproof, mould and insect resistant and has excellent acoustic performance; to mention a few distinct advantages. It is estimated that hempcrete can save you up to 40% of heating and cooling costs because of the breathable insulation that self-regulates temperature and humidity. Hempcrete is a low-density material and is resistant to cracking under movement, making it perfect to be used in areas that are earthquake-prone.
Hempcrete is considered a carbon-negative raw material because it not only absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while it grows, the carbon dioxide is permanently stored in the hempcrete block.

Donut Day, a day to celebrate the deeply delicious dough creation!. NATIONAL DONUT DAY
National Donut Day is an American National day, annually celebrated on the first Friday in June. Donut Day started out as a project for the Salvation Army in 1938, a bunch of volunteers were determined to raise funds during the Great Depression and pay tribute to the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’. The Doughnut Dollies, as they are also known, served doughnuts to soldiers during the First World War.
On Donut Day citizens the world over; pay tribute by indulging in the many variations of doughnuts. Many chain stores run doughnut inspired promotions and giveaways. For instance; Krispy Kreme will give you one free doughnut for National Donut Day and another if you can prove you have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Citizens love them so much, they have a bunch of notable annual Nasional days to celebrate the doughy deliciousness of doughnuts. National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day on June 8, National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day on September 14, and National Buy a Doughnut Day on October 30.
THE MINT DISPENSARY

Also sometimes referred to as Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, ALL is cancer of the white blood cells that are found in the immune system of jawed vertebrates (humans). Environmental risk factors include previous cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, and being exposed to very high levels of radiation that can be caused by a nuclear reactor accident.
SYMPTOMS
The signs and symptoms associated with ALL mimic those of flu, but flu symptoms generally improve within a few days. These include bone pain, fever, pale skin, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue and general decreased energy. Be sure to make an appointment with your doctor if these symptoms persist and have signs of other symptoms associated with ALL. Like bleeding from the gums, frequent infections, severe nose bleeds and lumps caused by swollen lymph nodes in and around the neck, armpits, abdomen or groin.
The tests and procedures used to diagnose ALL include testing blood for irregularities, checking bone marrow samples for leukemia cells and determining the spread of cancer to other parts of the body with imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds.

Emilene, after showing signs of going into remission, was admitted to ICU after undergoing an emergency operation to drain the excess fluid from her brain. The leukemia had spread to her brain causing a blockage that led to her developing hydrocephalus. In the battle to save her life, Emilene had fought through another three brain surgeries while enduring high-risk protocol chemotherapy.
TURNING POINT
A hellish five weeks had passed and the cancer cells were getting more aggressive, even though Emilene was receiving stronger chemo than before. Her parents received the soul-crushing news; they were advised to take Emilene home to receive palliative care for the remaining days of her life. Modern medicine had failed Emilene!
