Vegan and Cannabis-Infused Ice Cream Bar Opens Shop In Cape Town

Two stoned citizens from Cape Town are breaking into the world of legal marijuana with the opening of a new vegan and cannabis-infused ice cream and dessert bar in Woodstock. LIS Dessert Bar infuses the novelty and nostalgia of frozen desserts and sweet treats into a fun and indulgent new experience for a broad audience of customers. The shop, based at the Salt Circle Arcade, offers a range of vegan ice creams, desserts and CBD-infused edibles. Menu items include coconut milk-based ice creams, CBD doughnuts and other sweet treats, such as cheesecake, ice-cream sandwiches and carrot-cake slices.

    LIS Brand Background

The LIS brand was started by Ziyaad September and Yaaseen Cader just months before Covid-19 took the world by storm. Instead of throwing in the towel, the duo took their business online. After reaping the benefits of the recent CBD store and eCommerce boom, the pair decided to open an ice cream and dessert parlour, in celebration of the company’s success and perseverance during tough times.

    Vegan cannabis ice cream

The name “Lis” is Afrikaans slang for “lus”, meaning to long for something.

On Lis’s about page it reads:

Lis Vegan Cannabis is a CBD infused, vegan ice cream. Possibly the best thing since, well… We’re not quite sure. But we know it is the best thing, because everyone that tastes it is always Lis for more!

We’re a Capetonian original, guilt free vegan ice cream, infused with CBD that helps with pain, anxiety, depression, or just merely relaxing. Our flavours tell a story, do you Lis to hear more?

Lis CBD-infused ice creams and other edibles can be ordered online and at the Lis Dessert Bar. The cost is R80 for a 250ml tub (online and instore) and there are six flavours to choose from: Vanilla Coconut, Deep Choc, Choc Mint, Dose of Rose, River of Paradise and Rumi.

  • 5 Fascinating Facts About Cannabis That Will Blow Your Mind

5 Fascinating Facts About Cannabis That Will Blow Your Mind

There’s a lot more to know about cannabis than the correct way to smoke it. Over the years, cannabis lovers, scientists, and historians have compiled an array of ever-growing marijuana facts. Here are 5 fascinating facts about cannabis that will blow your mind.

    Bhutanese Pigs Are Stoners

pigs in In the Kingdom of Bhutan eating cannabis

In the Kingdom of Bhutan, pigs don’t necessarily fly, but they do get high! For generations, the Bhutanese people have been feeding their pigs cannabis to fatten them up. Marijuana is an appetite stimulant, so the porkers get munchies from eating Thimphu cannabis, which is Bhutan’s most famous strain. The taste profile of Thimphu is described as tasting both sweet and sour, with a hint of earthiness.

    Hollywood was once called “Hollyweed”

    hollywood turns hollyweed

In 1976 a stoner pulled a prank on the citizens of Los Angeles on New Year’s eve and vandalised the iconic “Hollywood” sign to read “Hollyweed.” The prankster managed to change the letters by using tarps to change the O’s in the sign to E’s.”

Henry Ford Build A Car From Hemp

Henry Ford designed and created a car made from hemp

Henry Ford designed and made a car from hemp in 1941. The automobile used hemp bio-fuel and was almost entirely made of plant material. The only steel in the car was its tubular welded frame, as Ford made the car with 70 percent of cellulose fibres from wheat straw, hemp and sisal, plus 30 percent resin binder.

Men and women react differently to cannabis

woman laying on her back smoking a joint

Gender differences are real when it comes to cannabis use. Studies show that women have a higher tolerance when it comes to THC. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to get an increased appetite, also known as “munchies”.

    Cannabis and Viagra don’t mix

    viagra pills and marijuana

Viagra won’t break down as readily in the blood of someone who’s been toking up, because Marijuana compounds can inhibit certain liver enzymes. Mixing cannabis and Viagra is therefore not a good idea and could cause a heart attack. New research proves that cannabis could actually be more effective in treating erectile dysfunction, best you light one up instead before popping another pill.

  • Stoner Chocolate Sauce To Have Handy When The Munchies Come Knocking

Stoner Chocolate Sauce To Have Handy When The Munchies Come Knocking

Making your own cannabis-infused stoner chocolate sauce could not be easier! It is quick to make and will last up to two weeks in your refrigerator. Eagerly waiting to be heated and poured over frozen ice cream or sorbet. Perhaps you could stir a tablespoon (or two) into a cup of hot milk or have a chocolate dipping sauce for…well, just about anything.

    Chocolate Covered Marshmallows

Commercial chocolate sauce is available in a variety of consistencies. When movies were all black-and-white, the chocolate sauce was often used to simulate blood. Back in the 1890’s chocolate syrup was marketed as a treatment for ailments like colic in infants. Later on, the focus was shifted to the commercial market as a dessert condiment.

    Stoner Profiteroles

Make this effortless cannabis-infused chocolate sauce in advance and refrigerate it until you need a decent lashing of liquid chocolate. We like adding a pinch of Himalayan salt to our dope sauce, feel free to omit it if you are salty enough.

    Chiros and Chocolate Sauce

It is important to mention, as always when it comes to homemade edibles, go low and go slow! The potency of your stoner chocolate sauce will depend on the weed strain you used to make your cannabis-infused coconut oil. Start with a tablespoon of stoner chocolate sauce and wait an hour to determine the vigour before topping up.

An Online Headshop For Anyone Interested In Pot Paraphernalia, Marijuana Must-Haves Or The Fringe Culture Created By The War On Drugs

An online headshop would never be able to give you the same experience as actually walking into a cliche brick-n-mortar headshop in the 1960s. You would probably choke on the religiously burning incense. A perfumed smoke meant to mask the odour of a smouldering marijuana cigarette, as they were commonly known back then. These kinds of vintage headshops specialized in cannabis paraphernalia generally marketed as ‘tobacco’ smoking apparatuses, to avoid attention from the authorities.

Headshops do not just sell items used for the consumption of cannabis; they generally also sell magazines, clothing and home decor, all based around the counter-culture. Other nostalgic items include hacky sacks, mood rings and tie-dye shirts.

    Needed Things Shop Front

Fast forward all the way to the 21st century and the list of items you will find in a headshop includes hashish pipes, one-hitters, bongs, bubblers, pipe screens, steam rollers, roach clips, vaporizers, dab rigs, e-nails, e-cigarettes, vape oils, rolling papers, gram scales, grinders, lighters, stash boxes and standard household items with dugouts – to name a few! Some headshops even sell items for cannabis cultivation like seeds, grow mediums and lighting.

  • The Online CBD Store For Me: A Comprehensive List Of Online CBD Stores In South Africa

The Online CBD Store For Me: A Comprehensive List Of Online CBD Stores In South Africa

It does not matter if you are just finding out about CBD, or if you are a marijuana master because Stoned Citizen has compiled a South African list so you can find the right online CBD store for you!

Here is our comprehensive list of trusted retailers of legitimate products in the form of oils, tinctures, vape cartridges, edibles, topicals and pet supplements. According to interim law; CBD products must contain less than 0.3% THC to be legally produced and distributed in South Africa, so there is no risk of intoxicating effects or failing a surprise drug test at work.

    Online CBD Store

These online CBD stores offer products with a variety of quality, potency and pricing options to suit your specific needs. These reputable stores adhere to international health and safety standards and protocols and should be able to provide third-party laboratory test results and discreet delivery. If you come across an online CBD store that is not featured on this list, you should avoid products that are suspiciously cheap or have a ridiculous amount of excellent reviews.

The three kinds of Cannabidiol, aka CBD, products that are generally available are isolates, broad- and full-spectrum extracts. The isolate is made by micro-encapsulating the CBD molecules, meaning no other cannabinoids are present in these products. Full-spectrum CBD includes all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavanoids which occur naturally in the cannabis plant. Broad-spectrum CBD, as the name implies, includes most of these compounds with very little to no traceable THC, which is the cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effect of marijuana.

    Entourage Effect

The Entourage Effect is a proposed mechanism in which all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids act like as an orchestrated sympathy to harmonize the overall psychoactive effects of cannabis. It is believed to work hand in hand with the endocannabinoid system in achieving pain management.

Products that are marketed as CBD should be non-intoxicating and have been known to treat a range of illnesses and ailments including; insomnia, anxiety, stress, depression, chronic pain, digestive issues, drug addiction and withdrawal, and inflammation.

  • Zolonnaise – How To Make Homemade Cannabis-Infused Mayonnaise And What To Do With It

Zolonnaise – How To Make Homemade Cannabis-Infused Mayonnaise And What To Do With It

What happens when you medicate a condiment as versatile as mayonnaise with the holy ‘erb? Zolonnaise of course! Having a medicated condiment on hand can assist when you are running late but need to take your greens. Any snack or meal is instantly medicated with Zolonnaise.

Fry being dipped into zolonnaise, a cannabis infusedmayonnaise

    Zol

Zol is a South African slang term for a marijuana cigarette, most recently made popular by Max Hurrel’s Zol. A song inspired by the cigarette prohibition that plagued SA citizens earlier this year with the onset of lockdown in the country.

    Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a thick, cold sauce commonly used as is, or as a base for other sauces and dressings made with eggs and oil. A widely used condiment that has a bunch of uses; from tenderising meat to replacing eggs in baked goods! The proteins and lecithin in the egg yolk serve as the emulsifiers when making a traditional mayonnaise recipe. There are many mayonnaise brands around the globe like Hellman’s or Heinz, each with their own recipes and ideas about the best ingredients and techniques.

Lady in a black dress enjoying the taste of Hellmann's Real Mayo

The exact history of mayonnaise is not clear, however it is believed to have been created in some variation somewhere between Spain and France. The first documented recipe of a sauce close to the modern idea of mayonnaise dates back to 1742. The etymology of the word is uncertain, with a few different stories ranging from the name being derived from ancient French words for ‘egg yolk’ or ‘stir’ to tales of a celebratory dinner prepared for the Duke of Richelieu at the port town of Mahon, Minorca in 1756. Mayonnaise was attested in English in 1815.

    Zolonnaise

Making your own mayonnaise at home is really simple. With a few ingredients and a determined whisking arm you will have delicious homemade mayonnaise in no time. We prefer making mayonnaise with a neutral oil like canola oil. Which is a great option when making cannabis oils. Canola oil is a vegetable oil made from a variety of rapeseed. Canola oil has a relatively low saturated fat content and has been known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, bone fractures and type-2 diabetes.

    Cannabis-infused Oil

Make a cannabis canola oil by infusing equal parts decarboxylated cannabis and canola oil in a slow cooker or crockpot for at least four hours, straining out the solids once it has cooled down.

Use your homemade Zolonnaise in salads, sauces, dips or as a condiment! It is a delicious way to medicate your meals and snacks!

  • Can The Cannabis You Smoke Cause Hay Fever?

Can The Cannabis You Smoke Cause Hay Fever?

Pollen from blooming spring buds is often to blame when allergies flair up as the seasons change. Spring has sprung and it’s finally warm enough to head outdoors, yet it’s also sinus season for cannabis smoking citizens who suffer from hay fever. But could the source of the cause be right in front of your nose? Does weed have an impact on seasonal allergies? Can you really be allergic to cannabis?

Stories of cannabis allergies have been popping up at a growing rate, with studies revealing a variety of symptoms. In an article entitled “Emerging allergens: Cannabis”, researchers found that the sativa, in particular, can cause a number of allergic reactions such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), conjunctivitis (pink eye), skin rashes, and asthmatic symptoms when smoked, inhaled, or chewed.

Before you freak out, it’s important to identify the difference between legitimate cannabis allergy symptoms and allergic reactions to substances found in cannabis that are not actually inherent to the plant, such as molds. Stoners with fungi allergies should rather pass on a moldy butt.

    cannabis hay fever moldy butt
Moldy cannabis butt can cause hay fever

Can cannabis be the perfect cure for hay fever?

Research shows that THC and CDB, both known for their anti-inflammatory properties, can help keep your airways open.

Sounds like good, right? Not necessarily. There are some things to take into consideration…

If you suffer from hay fever, there is a good chance that your throat and sinuses are inflamed during the pollen season. Smoking a joint can further irritate the throat, respiratory tract, and sinuses.

Best advise for stoners suffering from hay fever?

Consume cannabis as an edible. Cannabis-infused coconut oil may be an especially good choice during a seasonal allergy flareup, due to the oil’s antimicrobial properties.

Currently, there are no human studies on using CBD for allergies, however, many hay fever sufferers are seeing positive results from CBD oils. Theoretically, CBD may help with allergies through its stimulation of the endocannabinoid system, which modulates inflammation.

If you are thinking about using CBD oil for your allergy symptoms, it’s best to have a chat with your doctor first.

#GlassofIG: The 10 Best Halloween Glass Rigs To Inspire You For All Saints’ Eve

With Halloween around the corner, we wanted to share our list of the 10 Best Halloween inspired #GlassofIG Rigs to Inspire you for All Saints’ eve. The popular Instagram hashtag is used by glassblowers across the globe.

Glassblowing is a glass-forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble, or parison, with the aid of a blowpipe. Molten glass is viscous enough to be blown and gradually hardens as it cools down. A full range of glass blowing techniques was developed within a decade of its invention. These are made up of two major categories; free-blowing and mould-blowing.

Modern-day Halloween customs are said to have originated from an ancient Celtic harvest festival. With great Gaelic, Celtic and Christian influence All Saints’ Eve has also been influenced and adapted with its spread to North America.

    Voodoo Owl Doll

#GlassofIG Made by Calmbo and Muller Glass for Youngzkittlez’s highly admired collection.

The Voodoo owl has reference to Marinette the loa of power and violence in Haitian Voudo. She is represented by the screech owl and is believed to be the protector of werewolves. Her favourite offerings are black pigs or black roosters, who have been plucked alive in her honour.

    Chappy Raptor

#GlassofIG Made in Japan by Elbo Glass and AquariusT housed among the artsy collection of collector THC_Samuel.

The Chappy Raptor resembles a character based on a wascawwy wabbit (rascally rabbit) coming back as some sort of hybrid Bugs Bunny meets T-Rex Frankensteinesque monster. Perhaps to take vengeance on his life long hunter; Elmer Fudd. Or perhaps a beloved pet who has returned from a short visit at the Pet Semetary!

    Pimp My Ride

#GlassofIG Made by Salt Glass and Pakohwuzhere.

What seems to resemble a giant worm-like monster, using a vintage VW Kombi as a bulletproof vest! The 1990 American horror film; Tremors, tell the story of this murderous human-flesh-hungry beast tearing the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada apart!

    Not-so-Tin Man

#GlassofIG Made by Bug Glass for WitchDrX for a Halloween themed show in Salem.

This piece looks like a Halloween themed ode to the Tin Man from the 1939 American musical-fantasy movie; The Wizard of Oz! Perhaps this not-so-tin man decided to dress for the theme, but way too cute to resemble any form of a horror film character.

    Stay Puft

#GlassofIG Made by Ethan Windy for Kloud9Official.

A goofed Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the 1984 American Supernatural film; Ghostbusters! Playing of in New York City Stay Puft is a large white humanoid made up of conjoined marshmallows. He is conjured-up as a manifestation of the Sumerian god Gozer to destroy the world, in a battle with the ghostbusters.

    Patchwork Eeyore

#GlassofIG Made by Smart Glass and Muller Glass for Chris Bruce’s collection.

A suicidal voodoo doll version of the pessimistic and anhedonic old grey donkey; Eeyore from A.A. Milne’s Winnie The Pooh. Something tells me Eeyore is done losing his tail and perhaps Christopher Robin should steer clear, in case this donkey wants to pin a tail on him!

    Pincushion Mickey

#GlassofIG Made by Smart Glass and Muller Glass and forms part of YoungZkittlez’s collection.

If Jason Mickey won’t haunt your dreams, perhaps a pincushioned voodoo doll of Mickey Mouse will do the trick! There is no escaping voodoo, once a spell has been cast on an effigy with your likeness you too might end up with a button for an eye!

    Shorty the Killer Klown

#GlassofIG Made by Kaleb Folck along with Northernstar Glassworks and was scooped up by Mke Mcdowell.

If you suffer from coulrophobia, that is the irrational fear of clowns(!), then Shorty from Killer Klowns from Outer Space has surely haunted your nightmares before! The green-haired ‘Klown’ from this 1988 sci-fi horror comedy film is one of a posse of evil aliens who came to earth to capture, kill and harvest the human race for sustenance!

    Jack the Voodoo Pumpkin King

#GlassofIG Made by Muller Glass as a tribute to one of his favourite childhood movies.

Jack Skellington from the 1993 Halloween movie; The Nightmare Before Christmas, is the supernatural Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Not exactly a scary character, but Jack did nearly destroy Christmas before he proofed to be a good guy after all.

    When Bulletproof Coffee Meets Cannabutter

Stoned Citizens who swear by the ketogenic diet will be all too familiar with a cup of coffee served with a spoon of butter on the inside. Known as a bulletproof coffee, the drink is wildly popular in the low-carb, high-fat diet community, all thanks to its greasy content.

While some believe bulletproof coffee is a modern concoction, the high-calorie beverage has been consumed throughout history. The Sherpas of the Himalayas and the Gurage of Ethiopia have been drinking rich and creamy butter coffee and butter tea for hundreds of years.

Humans living in high altitude regions have been adding butter to their cup of Joe for an energy boost, as living and working in these areas increase calorie needs. Additionally, many Chinese citizens commonly drink tea made with yak butter. In Tibet, butter tea, or po cha, is a traditional beverage consumed on a daily basis by the Tibetan people.

Many health food personalities and celebrities swear by bulletproof coffee as a morning boost, without any afternoon crash because of the way the fat allows the body to process the caffeine. But what happens when you add cannabutter to your favourite liquid refreshment?

Cannabis isn’t a novel addition to coffee, tea or butter. From coffee pods that gets you stoned to cannabis-infused teas to the everyday stoner staple, the offerings in the cannasphere are endless.

By including cannabutter to your morning cup of tea or coffee, helps the human body to process cannabinoids better due to the presence of healthy fats from both the herby butter and coconut oil.

Looking for a good reason and a dash of motivation to drag your stoner ass out of bed? Treat your body and mind to the energy boost it deserves with this simple cannabis-infused bulletproof coffee recipe.
